the DR

Ok. Yea! We have internet access in the DR. We arrived around 9:30p into the Santiago airport. Had 21 bags to get through customs. All went smoothly until right at the end when they were questioning the Autoclave (a sterilizer). Mind you this was a $1000 piece of equipment that we really wanted to get through. So the language barrier became an issue. Dave finally thought to hand the officials the instructions which were in Spanish to facilitate their understanding. We got through. We're staying at a mission house where the couple rents beds to travelers or pilots. More stories to come, but right now, I'm beat and want to head to bed. Oh, I LOVE this heat. Love! Don't even mind the humidity.

Tomorrow we stand in line for bus tickets; apparently quite a process. Then have to get into Haiti before 4p for the last taxi during the daytime. Why? Because in Haiti, headlights are optional and we really don't want to be in a Haitian taxi at night. Found out that we are hoping to get to Caphaitien (northern Haiti) and stay over there. Then will drive south to Dessalines the following day.

Ok. Quick pilot story. These guys work for Agave (a mission focused airline; I think) and have been making a good 4 runs a day back and forth from "Port" for relief efforts. One of the guys told us his most recent flight was a really good one. He flew 4 orphans from Port to Caphaitien where they will go through the adoption process and then off to the States. Pretty cool to hear their stories.

On a personal note, it's been a great day. Just had to be patient with all the traveling. My cough is still nagging, but it seems to be improving. I've felt great otherwise. Pretty pumped for all this!

K. Now I really am heading to bed. Good night!
